I work like a pack mule, but it’s my own choice. I’m like a galley slave who’s chained for life to his oar but who loves the oar. Everything about it… I go over each sentence, time and again. I start by cutting all the words it can do without. You have to keep your eye on the job because words are very sly, the rubbishy ones go into hiding and you have to dig them out—repetitions, synonyms, things that simply don’t mean anything… I go over every image, metaphor, comparison, to see if they are fresh and accurate. If you can’t find the right adjective for a noun, leave it alone. Let the noun stand by itself. A comparison must be as accurate as a slide rule, and as natural as the smell of fennel… I take out all the participles and adverbs I can… Adverbs are lighter. They can even lend you wings in a way. But too many of them make the language spineless… A noun needs only one adjective, the choicest. Only a genius can afford two adjectives to one noun… Line is as important in prose as in an engraving. It has to be clear and hard… But the most important thing of all… is not to kill the story by working on it. Or else all your labor has been in vain. It’s like walking a tight-rope. Well, there it is… We ought all to take an oath not to mess up our job.

Trabajo como mula, pero esa es mi elección. Soy como un esclavo de galera que está encadenado de por vida a su remo, pero ama el remo. Ama todo sobre él… Reviso cada oración una y otra vez. Empiezo cortando todas las palabras de las que puedo prescindir. Tienes que mantenerte atento al trabajo porque las palabras son muy astutas, las que son un desperdicio se esconden, y tienes que desenterrarlas: repeticiones, sinónimos, cosas que simplemente no significan nada… Reviso cada imagen, cada metáfora, cada comparación, para ver si son frescas y precisas. Si no encuentras el adjetivo correcto para un sustantivo, déjalo en paz. Deja solo al sustantivo. Una comparación debe ser tan precisa como una regla de cálculo, y tan natural como el olor a hinojo… Dejo fuera todos los participios y los adverbios que puedo… Los adverbios son más ligeros. De cierta forma son capaces de prestarte alas. Pero demasiados pueden debilitar el lenguaje… Un sustantivo necesita solo un adjetivo, el más certero. Solo un genio puede permitirse dos adjetivos para un sustantivo… La línea es tan importante en la prosa como en un grabado. Debe de ser clara y firme… Pero lo más importante de todo… es no matar la historia al trabajar en ella. De lo contrario todo tu trabajo habrá sido en vano. Es como caminar sobre la cuerda floja. Bueno, ahí está… Debemos jurar que no vamos a estropear nuestro trabajo.
